Can becoming good friends with a girl first benefit before a relationship?

I know its the so called Friend Zone but would it actually benefit? I'm becoming good friends with a girl I really like at the moment and I actually don't mind it! Yes she's fit and all but I'm just as happy being friends :) it would be nice to progress further in the future but I'm just going to play it cool I think and see how things roll!
